Characteristic Dorsal rays XII, 9-10; Anal rays II, 10-11; pectoral rays 17-18; lateral-line scales 15-16; body depth 2.0-2.1 in standard length. 3 spinous procurrent rays on upper and lower orgins of caudal fin. Color pale green to light blue; nesting male yellow (changing hues during nesting), becoming blackish posteriorly. Looks similar to C. atripectoralis, but generally smaller and lacks the black area on the inside of the pectoral fin base.
habitats Found in large aggregations above thickets of branching Acropora corals in sheltered areas such as subtidal reef flats and lagoons. Juveniles closely tied to individual coral heads. Phytoplankton feeders. Breeding is done on sand and rubble. Males prepare 
Distribution Widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific from Red Sea to Line, Marquesan, and Tuamoto islands, north to the Ryukyu Islands, south to New Caledonia. It is found in southern Taiwanese waters.
